The Dirty Little Secret Behind My Bright Smile (and What It Taught Me About Change)

Growing up, I loved to brush my teeth. I was proud of how white they were. I had a whole routine: a dry, hard-bristle toothbrush, whitening toothpaste, and a final swish with hydrogen peroxide. People often complimented my smile, and I gladly shared my "secret routine."

But here’s the truth: I didn’t floss.

Even though my dentist told me how important it was… even though a colleague once said, “Flossing is more important than brushing,” I ignored it. Until one day, my dentist showed me vivid photos of gum disease. She warned me that I could lose my teeth.

That finally got through to me.

That’s when I learned something important—not just about dental care, but about change.

Here’s what worked:

  1. Identify your motivation.

I was proud of my smile. The idea of losing it was enough to get me to act.

  2. Start small.

If flossing daily felt overwhelming, starting every other day could have worked.

  3. Make it enjoyable.

I’m a shopper at heart—so I tested different floss options to find one I liked. (Yes, even self-care can be fun.)

  4. Connect it to an existing habit.

I always brushed my teeth and took vitamins in the morning. I added flossing in between. No extra thinking required.

Now, over a decade later, flossing is automatic.

🦷 Here's the takeaway: Small shifts, anchored in the right motivation, create big results.

And the same goes for your health, your mindset, your career, or anything you’re trying to improve.

What’s the one habit you want to start, but keep putting off?

If you're ready to turn “I should…” into “I do,” let’s talk, because the truth is, I can keep sharing pearls of wisdom, but honestly, the accountability that comes with coaching will get you to actually do "the thing" that you desperately want and absolutely deserve.
