There were so many more things that I wanted to express in last week’s blog about My 96 Pound Weight Loss Journey, but I didn’t want it to go on forever. I do, however, want to pick up where I mentioned about when to eat and when to not eat. I made the comment that you should eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full. It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? For many people, it’s not that simple. There are some very specific strategies about how to do that that I share with my clients, I’ll share one at the bottom of this e-mail, but first, how’d we get ‘here’?
When we’re babies, we cry for nourishment of different kinds, comfort and food being primary ones. Once our need was fulfilled, we stopped crying out for help. As we get older, we take these tried-and-true solutions and apply them to other scenarios where they may or may not be a good fit. Anxious in a social setting? Try eating (or later on in life this could be drinking alcohol as we saw our parents or peers doing or in the movies). Bored or lonely at night? Why not find comfort in a bag of potatoes chips or a pint of ice cream? The rub is when it’s not truly fulfilling your underlying need and worse, it’s exacerbating another problem, like excess weight or poor body image or physical discomfort.
The way you honor and heal your relationship with food and your body is you eat for physical nourishment AND you fulfill your emotional need with what it really craves. If it’s stress, you start a relaxation practice. If it’s boredom, you engage in adventure, hobbies, social activities, etc. Food is for physical hunger; there are other things for, er, other things or said otherwise, non-food solutions for non-hunger needs. Again, it sounds simpler to do than it is. HOW do you go about replacing food for what you really crave? Working with a Certified Coach will help you learn to do just that.
